is it ok to tile over skimmed plasterboard?
August 32009
My bathroom walls are plasterboard which are skimmed and painted.
Is it ok to tile on top of this? and if i do will I run the risk of the tiles falling off in a few years?
I’m considering pulling down all the plasterboard and putting up good quality plywood in its place to tile on. Is this the best thing to do?
Yes it is ok to tile on top of skimmed plaster board if the plaster is sound. However,……….
………..If it’s in a shower area then a cement based wall board like wonder board is best. DO NOT use plywood or plasterboard in a shower cubicle/room because if water gets behind it ,it rots.
If you’er one of these people who come on here asking for advice and then ignore it simply because best practice involves a bit more expense and a bit of hard work then feel free to ignore everything I’ve just said.

It is fine to tile on skimmed or unskimmed palster board and done properly they will stay put for years.

yes you can , but if you have a shower you should put 1/2 " PLYWOOD ON BOTH WALL’S FOR 3ft were you think the water would run down the wall , this will help the damp from getting through

I think you’ll be fine tiling over the plasterboard. Some friends of mine put up plasterboard in their kitchen with nonails glue and then tiled over it. It’s still there. And nothing has fallen off yet.

Plasterboard is fine to put tiles on if it put up correctly. Most builders will put tiles directly on to plasterboard , it will probably see you out and is less flammable that ply!

Remove the plaster first !! Otherwise You will not get an even surface on the tile. Break it away with a hammer, down to the lathe (Wood strips), then make sure you add any missing backing before hanging the drywall…… (always "Stagger" the joints)….use blue (Water barrier) drywall ONLY…use at least 5/8th inch thickness….good luck !

both skimmed plaster board or marine ply are fine to be tiled as long as they are rigid and there is no movement

If you end up removing the plaster board, I would replace it with a product like wonder board. Wonder board and other similar types are sold at most DIY stores. You can also place it over your plaster board for better adhesion. I am a construction manager and on the homes we build we screw a chicken type wire over the drywall and then float a layer of mortar over the wire and then set the tiles on that.

yes it is fine to go over the plasterboard, it sounds like you have studded walls if this is the case then remove the plasterboard from around the shower area and replace with Aqua board to stop any dampness as plasterboard in this area is not so good . Wickes is the best place for this

tile over itBUTuse a water proof adhesive or at lest one marked for use in a shower area. alsowhen you grout the tiles make sure you fill all the gaps and mastic around the shower tray/tile eadge
I do this all the time and have no problems with it.
i do bathroom fitting as a job

if you are going to tile on plaster board it is fine but scrape the paint off first, then coat the board with pva glue to seal then tile on top but if you decide to pull the plaster board off and replace with a board then use a product called hardi backer. board this will give you the perfect surface to tile and is waterproof as well .

majority of houses in UK have plasterboard walls in bathroom ..if the paint is sound and is Matt emulsion ..then pva the walls as you tile them making sure the pva is still tacky as you tile over ….or you could remove plasterboards and reboard using the green waterproof boards..then tile directly on to them ..no need to skim

You don’t need plywood. Use water resistant tile adhesive in wet areas and waterproof grout. It will last forever

Most new properties are of timber framed and plasterboarded. It is fully acceptable to fix wall tiles to this surface, however I would strongly recommend a waterproof adhesive especially if a shower is being fitted.
