what should i eat // did i eat unhealthy today?

January 172010

today i have aten 3 different types of cereal, & a lot of it.. 1 bowl with skim milk, the rest dry. 1 pear, 2 apples, strawberries, & some mixed nuts. i also drank water, & diet lipton green tea.

was this a lot? i feel bad about all the cereal & nuts.
what else shoulld i eat? will i gain weight?

This is a good meal. Cereal gives plenty of vitamins and minerals. You drank water and had some carbodyhdrates or sugars in the tea. The nuts and fuits gave protein and fiber and milk gave calcium. This is very healthy. You shoudn’t gain weight, everything is balanced.

Like the other poster said, it’s certainly better than some dog foods. I suspect I know what this food is and on the review site I read, the reviewer was concerned that rice and barley and egg product were used.

Is your doberman very active? If so, I would go with a food that contains more protein and a higher fat content.

Yes, I will do the process gradually.

I am currently feeding purina puppy chow, and I dont think that he likes it very much. He is very picky about his food, he only eats certain pieces. He also seems like he just wants more and more of the food, and i think that this is because there isnt any meat in purina puppy chow. His poop also looks funny. Do you think that this has all been caused my the poor quality food?
Ok, I know that purina is AWFUL!
So, should i still do the change gradualy? or should I change is cause it’s such poor quality.

Yes, that is a good quality food. MUCH MUCH better than Purina Puppy Chow.

ADD:
Yes, still change gradually. Otherwise your dog may have gas and loose stools. Change about 25% of the food at a time over about a week’s time.

THANKS!! :)

It is a good food. As another poster mentioned it gets a 4 out of 6 star rating on www.dogfoodanalysis.com

It is very similar in ingredients to Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover’s Soul which receives the same rating, but in my opinion the Chicken Soup brand has more meat and slightly better ingredients. Chicken Soup costs $36.00 for 35 pounds so if you are paying more or the same for Premium Edge think about switching to Chicken Soup.

What do you guys think of Kirkland brand dog food?

so since I have two cane corsos…..do you guys think any quality is being sacrificed… should I stick with solid gold or try Kirkland….. iSolid gold costs 55 bucks for 33lb bag. this Kirkland stuff is 21.99 for a 40 lb bag.

I wouldn’t feed my dogs Kirkland, pedigree purina or any other non wholistic foods. If you are concerned about the price look for another food that is safe and good quality. Solid gold is one of the best. But try California natural,Wolf Brands,Evo, Innova,or even better cook for them make a bunch and either freeze it and use as needed and only buy kibble for an expander of a cooked meal. I buy ground lamb
lamb steaks, fresh chicken or beef, mixed frozen veggies, with brown rice. The web site I have included has a link to 168 dog food recipies with calorie amounts as well as the names of the best foods on the market. Lets put it this way….. What you spend on your dogs food you will save in the long run . you will keep them healthy and out of the vets office.

Which one is the best SENIOR dog food?

October 312009

We have to put Chuckles on a Senior Dog Food, which one do *you* think is better? I noticed that DN started with a grain, not a meat, is this better for a Senior? Also, do you know of any ‘cheap’ GOOD quality foods? (I know about Kirkland, but we never go to Costco.)

Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover’s Soul Senior Dog Formula:

Chicken, turkey, oatmeal, whole grain brown rice, chicken meal, turkey meal, whole grain white rice, chicken fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols), potatoes, cracked pearled barley, millet, duck, salmon, egg product, flaxseed, natural chicken flavor, kelp, potassium chloride, salt, choline chloride, glucosamine hydrochloride, chicory root extract, carrots, peas, apples, dried skim milk, cranberry powder, rosemary extract, parsley flake. Vitamins and minerals.

Diamond Naturals Senior 8+ Formula:

Whole grain brown rice, chicken, chicken meal, egg product, oatmeal, beet pulp, chicken fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols), flaxseed, natural chicken flavor, brewers dried yeast, potassium chloride, dried chicory root, glucosamine hydrochloride, choline chloride, vitamin E supplement, chondroitin sulfate, beta carotene, iron proteinate, zinc proteinate, copper proteinate, manganese proteinate, ferrous sulfate, zinc sulfate, copper sulfate, potassium iodide, thiamine mononitrate, manganous oxide, ascorbic acid, vitamin A supplement, L-carnitine, biotin, calcium pantothenate, manganese sulfate, sodium selenite, pyridoxine hydrochloride (vitamin B6), vitamin B12 supplement, riboflavin, vitamin D supplement, folic acid.

Thank you!

Chicken Soup is definitly better. I would prefer if it was chicken meal instead of chicken but it’s still better than Diamond Naturals. That’s my opinion anyways. I’ve never been in favor of Diamond before, not even their Naturals, but that’s just me…I know DN is a good brand but Chicken Soup is probably better.

Oh and BTW Chuckles since you have a senior *&* an adult there is a Chicken Soup Lite…that you can feed both of them. :) Good luck!

OH! How’s Chuckles doing with his cut? I bet he’s annoyed by that cone! LOL poor guy! It’s for the best though! :)

Is dry milk any less expensive than normal, liquid milk?

October 292009

I was getting interested in using non-fat dry milk so that I can reduce the amount of liquid I have to carry back home when I go for groceries and it sounded like a less expensive alternative. But is it really?

At the supermarket I go to, the largest size dry milk, with the cheapest per-pound unit price, is about $15 and it says it makes 20 quarts (5 gallons).
Then I go check out the supermarket’s dairy fridge and find their 1 gallon milk at $2.59, which would be $12.95 for 5 gallons.
Of course if I go for a smaller package of dry milk, then the price differential will be even greater…
I also browsed Amazon a little bit and it doesn’t seem like they have it any cheaper either, especially considering the shipping cost.

I actually prefer the taste of skim milk, so so long as dry milk tastes just like skim milk I will be happy with the taste.

But does dry milk really save you money?
Also considering that water is quite expensive for me, because I live in a dorm…

It’s completely disgusting. We bought it when we lived in Alaska because it was a lot cheaper there due to transportation costs. It’s somewhat ok for cooking but you will not want to drink it plain.

You can try looking for shelf-stable packaged of milk – they’re usually one quart and in a square box. They are typically found on the shelf and not refrigerated and they don’t need to be refrigerated until after you open them.
