Would it be healthy for me to regualy drink milkshakes?

December 112009

Im 14 years old. My diet must have an average amount of fats( bout 30g a day) but not high and my diet must include protein and lots of vitamins and minerals to aid my growth. I have loads of semi-skimmed milk in my cereals but I was also thinking about starting to drink milkshakes everyday when I get home from school, like yazoo or friji ones. Would this be healthy? They both conain 3.1grams of protien per 100ml and less than 1%fat. Also, each bottle provides you with 70% rda of calcium and 95%of your vitamin D rda. If I could think of anything negative about it, it would be that they include about 9.8grams of sugar per 100ml but would this be ok as I’m guessing it’s natualy from the milk?
So would it be healthy to drink a friji or yazoo everyday? Each bottle is 500ml if that helps"/
thanks

Go right ahead a kid needs to have fun LOL

Yes, I think that would be good. However, if you feel like you need more protein, you could buy protein shake mix at a health store, like GNC. They have different flavors and you can mix with yogurt or milk and they give you lots of extra protein. Plus, they would be less expensive!

Yeah. Lots of protein and calcium.

Growing up milk vs cows milk?

October 292009

My baby was breastfeed until 9 1/2 months, and at 11 months Im still a bit unsure about all the milks available and what is best for my baby.
At 12 months I was planning on putting my baby girl on cows milk, but after seeing some of the formula ads im wondering whether im suppose to continue her on "growing up" milk. Does it make much of a difference? What do mothers who never use formula do?
And on cows milk, does it really have to be full fat milk, I assume semi skimmed has the same amount of calcium in it?

My son is almost 14 months and we’ve chosen to keep him on formula. We use HIPP Organic formula 6 months+. He has 1 or 2 9oz bottles of formula per day.

As far as I can see, no one actually recommends switching to cow’s milk. Doctors/pediatricians/health visitors etc just say "you can if you like".

Our reasons for sticking with formula are:

- I can’t find a health benefit or any other reason to switch (other than saving money).

- Cow’s milk is very low in iron, the iron it contains is not well-absorbed and cow’s milk also causes slight intestinal bleeding… over time, it can cause anemia. As formula contains plenty of iron, it’s unlikely to cause anemia!

- Since his first birthday, my son has become a very picky eater. When I say picky, I mean he will generally eat little to nothing between waking up and 5pm! I feel he’s better off having 9oz of formula at breakfast time than 9oz of cow’s milk… especially as he won’t eat/will only drink at that time.

- When we’re done with formula (hopefully by his 2nd birthday), I don’t think cow’s milk as a regular thing is healthy. It contains all sorts of nasty things (e.g. dairy cows are given hormones to increase there milk supply x 10) and there are plenty of other calcium rich foods out there that he can eat without many of the health risks that come with cow’s milk.

If my son wasn’t born with a tongue tie, I would have breastfeed until he self-weaned. Humans are the only mammals to drink milk beyond infancy… I wouldn’t have given him cow’s milk at all.

As for full fat vs semi-skimmed: Babies/toddlers need fats for brain/nerve development, which is why full fat is supposedly better for them. Semi skimmed milk contains chemical whitener so it depends how you feel about your child drinking that on a daily basis… then again, people argue if their child eats cheese/yogurt regularly they don’t need to have full fat milk and can have semi skimmed.

It’s your decision what you do… some people say growing up milk is a money making scheme, but I know I’d prefer to give my son that over standard cow’s milk. As I said, we use the HIPP Organic 6m+ formula, which is not only organic, but is the cheapest on the shelf! It works out cheaper than the HIPP Organic 12m+ too… go figure.

Are there different levels of Calcium ?

September 82009

In milk between whole milk (pasteurised) semi skimmed and skimmed. Or in other words between blue green and red top and which has the lowest amount ?

virtually the same, only the fat has been removes in low fat and non fat milk.

I used to be 16 stone at school ,I am now a comfy size 12 and love to excersise.?

August 252009

But, I think my obssesion with weight is making my little boys life hell! He is 10 years old and already 8 st 7 lb. He is a stocky built lad ,very large shoulders and hands,I would say he is average height for his age. He is VERY active, goes to football twice a week and is constantly on the go.I hate to see kids sat in front of tvs and game consoles! His typical daily diet is Breakfast .a small bowl of bran flakes with skimmad milk (not sure if this should be semi skimmed for calcium?) and a slice of wholemeal bread with low fat spread and a small glass of orange juice
Lunch. He takes two slices of whlemeal bread with ham and lettuce , bottle of flavoured water low fat yoghurt and a piece of fruit
Tea . Usually meat and veg ,home cooked stews no desserts.I try to encourage him to drink lots of water but find it hard to do it myself in winter so has been drinking more no sugar fizzy drinks but limited!
His belly is the main problem it is very large, can anyone help me help him?

at that age its just puppy fat.it sounds like he has a good balance of diet and exercise, it will right itself in time.

skin on fingers?

August 232009

what are the little bits of skin that appear alongside the nail, why do people including myself get them?
i heard it was a calcium defficiancy but i drink loads of milk.
(semi skimmed)

do you mean cuticles?

Is this healthy? NOT A DIET!?

August 212009

breakfast :
2 cups of bran flakes, 100 ml semi skimmed milk
2 slices wholemeal toast with low fat jam

snack : peanut cereal bar

Lunch : sandwich with chicken cold meat, apple and calcium yoghurt drink

dinner : chicken , fish or lamb with carrots or peas or mushrooms

total :1300 calories

i’m 15 and 5ft7 weighing 115lbs

THIS IS NOT A DIET, I ACTUALLY MAINTAIN WEIGHT WITH THIS MEAL PLAN!!

I think it’s good except you may be getting too many carbs.

if i do this routine how long will it take me to lose a stone / 13 lbs???

August 192009

morning
- semi skimmed milk with a very small bowl of special k

lunch
- two ryvitta with extra light lowfat cheese spread (theres no fat and only 22kcals in it)

dinner
- 1 small potato / small amount of wholegrain rice
– small amount of meat – could be chicken, beef or ham(im gona try stick with chicken mostly but depends sometimes with what my mum cooks)
– lots of vegetables (mostly green)

– one pint of semi skimmed milk (i have to have this to higher my calcium)

and also through the day i drink 3 litres of water and two cups of green tea..

and i do 45 minutes excercise (atleast) on my excercise bike everyday

……..is this a healthy diet and also how long will it take me to lose a stone/13 lbs??????

To calculate how long it will take for you to lose 13lbs, you need to count the calories.

Morning:
1/2 cup of semi skimmed milk = 60 calories
30g of Special K = 115 calories
Lunch:
x2 original Ryvitta = 45 calories
Extra light Philly cheese = 20 calories
Dinner:
x1 small potato = 80 calories OR
1/2 bowl (80g) wholegrain rice = 110 calories
Small amount (about 100g) of meat = 100 calories
Vegetables = 50 calories

Altogether, that’s only 490 calories a day. Combined with the exercise, you’ll lose 3 or 4 lbs a week. BUT, it’s not a healthy diet.

I can tell you from personal experience that firstly, it’ll be hard for you to stick to that menu, you’ll probably feel good during the day but get heaps of cravings at night, you’ll get dizzy and lightheaded, you’ll be lethargic and extremely tired, and whatever weight you do lose, you’ll just gain right back.

I’ve been yoyo and crash dieting since I was about 14, and until I was 18 (last year) and stopped being stupid and actually stuck to a sensible diet, I didn’t lose any weight permanently. When I yoyo dieted, I’d lose 10lbs, gain 10lbs, lose 10lbs, etc. When I was 17 my weight totally rebounded and I got to 145lbs, I’m only 5 foot 2. Then, I stuck to a 1000 calorie diet and now, 5 months later, I’m 110lbs. I still want to lose another 10lbs though, and I’m following my own 900 calorie plan. I’ll show you one of my daily meal plans:

30g Coco Pops with 100g milk = 160 calories
English muffin with one egg and a light beef patty = 340 calories
1/2 bowl of rice and 100g of skinless chicken = 200 calories
Several pieces of sliced peaches = 40 calories
Funsize Milk Bar = 60 calories
4 Ritz biscuits with extra light Philly cheese = 100 calories

Make sure you don’t starve yourself! You won’t lose any weight at all and you’ll just make yourself sick.

After 1yr old, is full fat cow’s milk better than Hipp Growing Up organic milk (stage3, 10mos+) or vice versa?

August 172009

I know that for babies of 12 months and older (in some cases earlier), babies -can- drink cow’s milk, and -should- drink full fat cow’s milk as opposed to semi-skimmed or non-fat milk, but is full fat cow’s milk actually -better- than Hipp Organic Growing Up milk stage 3 (10 months-3 years) and similar products, *OR* Is Hipp (SMA, Aptamil, etc. for 10+ months) follow-on milks -better- than cow’s milk [if you don't mind the cost]?

Wouldn’t the Hipp/SMA/Aptamil (for 10+ months) be even better than cow’s full fat milk because of the extra nutrients and vitamins (and same calcium and fat as cow’s milk)?

Is the only reason people don’t use them because of the cost? (i.e., If cost were not a factor, wouldn’t everyone stick with the Hipp, SMA, or Aptamil follow-on’s and/or agree they’re better than cow’s milk [even if not necessary for baby's health]?)
Thank you for some of the super fast answers … Can you explain -why- full fat milk is better? (Why would extra nutrients be bad?) And I have tasted the Hipp follow-on, it’s great :) tastes like cream. My toddler doesn’t mind cow’s milk (drinks it if we’re out/at a restaurant), but again, if more nutrients are good, why not? (And these days cow’s milk have HCG and other additives too, right?)

I think at some point, introducing milk is necessary.

I used formula and milk til my son was nearly 14 months old. He just wasnt eating enough meat/protein for my taste, so I supplemented with formula 2x’s a day.

Cost is part of it…but in reality…milk is pretty dang expensive anymore too…so dont think its the whole cause of switching to milk.
