will drinking one glass of skim milk a day make me gain weight?

October 312009

i’m just beginning to recover from a big ED (eating disorder) and i haven’t had milk or calcium in soo long (i haven’t had meat or bread in eyons either) but if i drank one glass of skim milk (0% fat) a day, would i gain weight?

i mean, if it’s 0% fat it’s not going to make my body fat percentage go up, is it?

i don’t wanna gain weight lol.
i don’t mean "if i ONLY drank a glass of skim milk" i mean, if i drank on top of everything else i eat.

Dairy products contain fat, as does every other food. Here’s the thing. Healthy fats do not make you gain weight. You NEED healthy fats in your diet so that your body can work properly. You also need carbs and protein. Eating a healthy, well balanced diet and exercising will eventually keep you at a proportionate weight for your body size and height. There may be an adjustment period due to your ED though. Skim milk is an excellent addition to your diet. Make sure you’re getting vitamins as well. One more suggestion from a former anna girl…. throw away your scale, learn about nutrition and set some goals for your life. Best of luck.

Would it be healthy for me to regualy drink a milkshake?

October 312009

Im 14 years old. My diet must have an average amount of fats( bout 30g a day) but not high and my diet must include protein and lots of vitamins and minerals to aid my growth. I have loads of semi-skimmed milk in my cereals but I was also thinking about starting to drink milkshakes everyday when I get home from school, like yazoo or friji ones. Would this be healthy? They both conain 3.1grams of protien per 100ml and less than 1%fat. Also, each bottle provides you with 70% rda of calcium and 95%of your vitamin D rda. If I could think of anything negative about it, it would be that they include about 9.8grams of sugar per 100ml but would this be ok as I’m guessing it’s natualy from the milk?
So would it be healthy to drink a friji or yazoo everyday? Each bottle is 500ml if that helps"/
thanks

Yeah. Lots of protein and calcium.

Which one is the best SENIOR dog food?

October 312009

We have to put Chuckles on a Senior Dog Food, which one do *you* think is better? I noticed that DN started with a grain, not a meat, is this better for a Senior? Also, do you know of any ‘cheap’ GOOD quality foods? (I know about Kirkland, but we never go to Costco.)

Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover’s Soul Senior Dog Formula:

Chicken, turkey, oatmeal, whole grain brown rice, chicken meal, turkey meal, whole grain white rice, chicken fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols), potatoes, cracked pearled barley, millet, duck, salmon, egg product, flaxseed, natural chicken flavor, kelp, potassium chloride, salt, choline chloride, glucosamine hydrochloride, chicory root extract, carrots, peas, apples, dried skim milk, cranberry powder, rosemary extract, parsley flake. Vitamins and minerals.

Diamond Naturals Senior 8+ Formula:

Whole grain brown rice, chicken, chicken meal, egg product, oatmeal, beet pulp, chicken fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols), flaxseed, natural chicken flavor, brewers dried yeast, potassium chloride, dried chicory root, glucosamine hydrochloride, choline chloride, vitamin E supplement, chondroitin sulfate, beta carotene, iron proteinate, zinc proteinate, copper proteinate, manganese proteinate, ferrous sulfate, zinc sulfate, copper sulfate, potassium iodide, thiamine mononitrate, manganous oxide, ascorbic acid, vitamin A supplement, L-carnitine, biotin, calcium pantothenate, manganese sulfate, sodium selenite, pyridoxine hydrochloride (vitamin B6), vitamin B12 supplement, riboflavin, vitamin D supplement, folic acid.

Thank you!

Chicken Soup is definitly better. I would prefer if it was chicken meal instead of chicken but it’s still better than Diamond Naturals. That’s my opinion anyways. I’ve never been in favor of Diamond before, not even their Naturals, but that’s just me…I know DN is a good brand but Chicken Soup is probably better.

Oh and BTW Chuckles since you have a senior *&* an adult there is a Chicken Soup Lite…that you can feed both of them. :) Good luck!

OH! How’s Chuckles doing with his cut? I bet he’s annoyed by that cone! LOL poor guy! It’s for the best though! :)

cognitive dissonance?

October 312009

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cognitive_dissonance

christians, muslims, pagans, theists, cultists and supernaturalists of all stripes:

(if you’re smart enough to read – or skim – and understand the above Wikipedia article)

I think there’s a part of your mind that *knows* your beliefs are irrational, improbable, and very possibly total BS. your "faith" tries to override this fact – it tries to hold its own agains encroaching reality – and that’s where the *cognitive dissonance* kicks in.

it’s easy to recognize when it happens to other people. UFO believers hold on to their faith even when all avenues of evidence are exhausted. the idiots! but it’s much harder to recognize when it happens to yourself.

when will you surrender to the inevitible? do your mind a favor: stop trying to believe what you know is impossible. embrace skepticism. embrace rationality. give atheism a shot.

come on in, the water’s fine. take the plunge. your sanity will thank you for it.

TY.

That actually happens to me all the time but my response/interpretation of it is precisely the reverse of yours.

I like the real world that I am used to, but things keep happening that make me nearly sure God exists.

It’s not just me, other people with me are witnesses with equal fascination of what has happened.

I am in utter disbelief of what I have seen lately.

I feel like my subconscious knows God really does exist but my consciousness doesn’t want to know.

♥POLL: How often do you read through your previously asked Questions and think, "Wow. that was really dumb?"

October 312009

….. I’ve done that a few times as i am skimming through older Q’s that need to be resolved. There were a few that i noticed that made me think, "Girl … what the frig were you on when you asked that?" LmAo.

Have you ever done this?

Lol.
Yeah.
I did that yesterday.
I was like, I don’t even remember these questions.
:D

for the people who consume ‘Skimmed’ dairy products, How do you feel when consuming these products?why are u?

What do people look for in life when consuming skimmed dairy products? what does it make them feel?

I drink skim milk because all kinds of milk taste nasty to me and I figure if its going to taste bad no matter what, it might as well not have as much fat in it.

What is a list of non tainted candy?

October 312009

I heard that there is a lot of candy with full cream milk powder and skim milk powder, which could be tainted with melamine poisoning. Also Halloween is coming up and I do not want my kids and the tricker treaters to be poisoned because I didn’t buy the right candy and I didn’t check for a list of the good candy. Is there anyway you could give me a list?

I am not too sure. I live in Canada, and I know if I visit the food inspection website it lists for recalls. I know a lot of dollar store candy and chocolate was affected. Try visiting candy maker websites to see any recalls or allergy listings.

How is lowfat/skim milk made?

October 292009

Posted in skim milk | 3 Comments »

What happens to skim/lowfat milk that makes it different from whole milk?

Processors skim *ALL* milk.

That is, they run the milk through a special type of continuous centrifuge that’s called a "cream separator". Cream is thicker than milk, but it’s also much lighter.

They add back part of the cream to produce 2% milk, and more of the cream to produce 3.5% butterfat "whole milk".

After they add back the cream, they homogenize the milk, which is to say, they run it through a very tight sieve, so that the globules of cream are reduced in size. This keeps them suspended in the milk, so that they don’t rise to the top as happens in real milk.

Unfortunately, there are some problems with homogenization, in that it makes milk "turn" faster, and it isn’t as wholesome, and causes hardening of the arteries. However, it is *whiter* than non-homogenized milk, and some consumers are too lazy to shake a container of milk before they use it.

The most healthful milk to drink is raw milk, if your state allows it to be sold.

Growing up milk vs cows milk?

October 292009

My baby was breastfeed until 9 1/2 months, and at 11 months Im still a bit unsure about all the milks available and what is best for my baby.
At 12 months I was planning on putting my baby girl on cows milk, but after seeing some of the formula ads im wondering whether im suppose to continue her on "growing up" milk. Does it make much of a difference? What do mothers who never use formula do?
And on cows milk, does it really have to be full fat milk, I assume semi skimmed has the same amount of calcium in it?

My son is almost 14 months and we’ve chosen to keep him on formula. We use HIPP Organic formula 6 months+. He has 1 or 2 9oz bottles of formula per day.

As far as I can see, no one actually recommends switching to cow’s milk. Doctors/pediatricians/health visitors etc just say "you can if you like".

Our reasons for sticking with formula are:

- I can’t find a health benefit or any other reason to switch (other than saving money).

- Cow’s milk is very low in iron, the iron it contains is not well-absorbed and cow’s milk also causes slight intestinal bleeding… over time, it can cause anemia. As formula contains plenty of iron, it’s unlikely to cause anemia!

- Since his first birthday, my son has become a very picky eater. When I say picky, I mean he will generally eat little to nothing between waking up and 5pm! I feel he’s better off having 9oz of formula at breakfast time than 9oz of cow’s milk… especially as he won’t eat/will only drink at that time.

- When we’re done with formula (hopefully by his 2nd birthday), I don’t think cow’s milk as a regular thing is healthy. It contains all sorts of nasty things (e.g. dairy cows are given hormones to increase there milk supply x 10) and there are plenty of other calcium rich foods out there that he can eat without many of the health risks that come with cow’s milk.

If my son wasn’t born with a tongue tie, I would have breastfeed until he self-weaned. Humans are the only mammals to drink milk beyond infancy… I wouldn’t have given him cow’s milk at all.

As for full fat vs semi-skimmed: Babies/toddlers need fats for brain/nerve development, which is why full fat is supposedly better for them. Semi skimmed milk contains chemical whitener so it depends how you feel about your child drinking that on a daily basis… then again, people argue if their child eats cheese/yogurt regularly they don’t need to have full fat milk and can have semi skimmed.

It’s your decision what you do… some people say growing up milk is a money making scheme, but I know I’d prefer to give my son that over standard cow’s milk. As I said, we use the HIPP Organic 6m+ formula, which is not only organic, but is the cheapest on the shelf! It works out cheaper than the HIPP Organic 12m+ too… go figure.
